Whitley MkIII K8950 DY-M of 102 Squadron RAF. Take Off from RAF Driffield 2355 hrs on the night of 8/9th September 1939 for a leaflet dropping mission to The Ruhr, Germany and was Shot down by Flak over Thuringia, crashing near Kassel, Germany.

All the crew survived and became first complete bomber crew to be taken into captivity.

The Armstrong Whitworth Whitley was a British twin engined medium bomber, one of the three types of twin engined bomber in service with the RAF at the outbreak of World War II and was part of the first bombing raid over Germany. The aircraft was withdrawn from front line bomber service in 1942 but remained in service as a maritime reconnaissance aircraft with Coastal Command throughout the war and also served as a glider-tug, trainer and transport aircraft. Versions of the aircraft were also used by British Overseas Airways Corporation as a civilian freighter.
