Who are the Competitors of Amazon?

Though Amazon has a large hold on ecommerce, it’s not all the giant does. Amazon has branched out into multiple industries, including music and video streaming, physical stores, and subscription services. This means there are additional competitors of Amazon outside the ecommerce space.

Let’s take a look at some of the most significant competitors of Amazon, starting with the United States retail space.

eBay

eBay started just around a year after the launch of Amazon, with Amazon launching in 1994 and eBay in 1995. eBay’s revenue has gone down over the years, but they still offer a unique service in comparison to Amazon, which is auctions. Sellers on eBay can either list products at a set rate or as an auction, allowing them to potentially make more for their items.

Walmart

Walmart has Amazon beat in the longevity department, with them having been around since 1962. Amazon and Walmart have been regular competitors, with Amazon taking over the online space while Walmart commands the physical retail space.

Walmart offers a similar space to that of Amazon, allowing third-party brands to sell on the Walmart Marketplace. Even as big as Amazon has grown, Walmart continues to outperform them in revenue. In 2023, Amazon came in at a whopping $575 billion in revenue, but Walmart outpaced them with $648 billion in 2024.

Target

Target is another huge retailer with a long history of performance. Target doesn’t necessarily compete with Amazon on a direct or revenue basis, but they have worked hard to establish brand loyalty. Regular Target shoppers swear by the store and some even refuse to shop anywhere else.

Flipkart

Flipkart is a massive ecommerce retailer based in India. It was initially founded in 2007 and has since become one of the country’s largest shopping platforms. They offer everything from home decor and electronics to fashion and more, just like Amazon.

Also like Amazon, Flipkart has its own fulfillment network and offers same-day and next-day delivery options. While Flipkart is its own platform, it was acquired by Walmart in 2018, allowing the platform to grow even further by using Walmart’s resources.

Otto

Otto certainly has Amazon beaten when it comes to longevity. In fact, Otto was initially founded in 1949 where its products were ordered by mail and phone. They entered the ecommerce space in 1995. Otto offers a wide range of goods, but its largest market is in home furnishings.

Alibaba

Alibaba is a massive ecommerce marketplace in China that allows brands to find product suppliers. While their primary site offers wholesale products, they also have several child companies that sell many of the same types of products that Amazon does.

They also compete with Amazon within the cloud computing space. Alibaba has remained a top Chinese Amazon competitor for many years and doesn’t look like that will change anytime soon.

Streaming Services Competitors

Amazon put its hat into the streaming ring with Prime Video many years ago. However, it has undergone many name and service provision changes since then. It initially started as Amazon Unbox in 2006, going through a few more changes until landing on Prime Video in 2011.

Prime Video was separated from Amazon Prime and officially launched worldwide. While Prime Video has performed relatively well, it certainly has tough competition within the streaming space. Prime Video currently sits at around 200 million subscribers.

Netflix

Of course, the biggest contender in streaming is Netflix. The streaming giant initially launched in 1998 as a DVD mail subscription service. However, they introduced online streaming in 2007 and exploded into a household name. Since then, Netflix has become an immensely favored streaming platform that even went into producing its own content.

Prime Video and Netflix have regularly been head-to-head over the years. This continues to be true even in the current year, with both Netflix and Prime Video achieving a 22 percent market share. However, Netflix beats out Prime Video with a subscriber count of 247.2 million.

Disney+

Next in the running for streaming services is Disney+, with a subscriber count of 150.2 million. Disney+ initially began as a streaming home to find old classics and renowned content. However, with Disney+ now producing its own content, they have experienced regular growth that will likely continue to trend upward.

Max

Previously known as HBO Max, Max is next in the running for streaming competition, with a subscriber count of 95.1 million. However, they also managed to slot themselves into third place when it came to market share at 14 percent. Max is home to many beloved and well-known shows that viewers love, including Game of Thrones and the newly launched House of the Dragon.

A Long List of Competitors

The above is far from a full list of Amazon’s competitors. Not only are there additional competitors in both of these spaces, but Amazon also has more competitors in other spaces, such as Spotify in music streaming.

The point is that while Amazon has built an empire, they are far from all-powerful, and other entities can still make their way within the market. The same goes for new retailers launching their business. The truth is that while new retailers may never be as big as Amazon, they can still carve a piece of the pie for themselves.

This is especially true when offering something unique to Amazon. A good example of this is Etsy, which launched in 2005. Etsy allows independent sellers to market and sell their custom and hand-made products and services, which is not a successful niche in the Amazon space.

Overall, Amazon may be huge, but it certainly isn’t the end-all, be-all of online shopping. In fact, some shoppers still avoid Amazon because they feel many of its offerings are generic products.
